Act of Accord

The Act of Accord was passed by the English Parliament on October 25, 1460, fifteen days after Richard, Duke of York had entered the Council Chamber and laid his hand on the empty throne. Under the Act, King Henry VI of England was to retain the crown for life but York and his heirs were to succeed. Henry was forced to agree to the Act but it was unacceptable to Henry's son, his mother and a large body of Lancaster supporters not present in Parliament. Far from healing wounds it split the kingdom and provoked a bloody struggle for the throne, the Wars of the Roses, not finally resolved for almost forty years until the succession of Henry VII of England.
