The Diocese of Nelson is one of seven dioceses of the Anglican Church in Aotearoa, New Zealand and Polynesia. The Diocese covers the top part of the South Island of New Zealand, which is mostly the area north of a line drawn from Greymouth to Kaikoura.

The diocese was founded in 1858 and the seat of the Bishop is at Christ Church Cathedral in Nelson.

On 5 February 2007, while in a wheelchair, [1] Richard Ellena was consecrated as the latest Bishop of Nelson.

Richard, who is 55, succeeds Derek Eaton. He was Bishop Derek Eaton’s Vicar General, or deputy, since 2002 – and he has pledged to continue to “hold high the flag of evangelical orthodoxy” during his term as the Diocese of Nelson’s 10th Bishop.

Nelson diocese is a noted Evangelical diocese.[2]
