[edit] History

The Luiss University traces its origins back to the transformation of a pre-existing Roman institution: Università Pro Deo, founded in 1966.

In 1974 a group of businessmen led by Umberto Agnelli decided to invest people and money in an innovative project for the education and training of a managerial class. Luiss adopted a new educational model along the lines of those to be found in the leading international universities.

In later years, the founders were joined by other important public- and private-sector industrial groups and banks, which brought an excellent array of entrepreneurs to the board of directors of Luiss.

In 1977 the University officially changed its name to Libera Università Internazionale degli Studi Sociali – Luiss. A year later the then chairman of the Italian Confederation of Industry (Confindustria), Guido Carli, was appointed as President of the University. In this period the hallmarks of the Luiss educational project became ever more evident: strict admission criteria, a set number of students, courses in tune with market demands and hence close ties with the business world as well as the study of computers and a foreign language.

Guido Carli remained President of the University until his death in 1993.

In 1982 Luiss expanded and a Law faculty was added.

In 1994 the Board of Directors decided to name the University after Guido Carli death.

In 1997 Luiss Management S.p. A. was set up to cater for market-oriented education.
