He was said to have been adored by his older brother Louis XIII of France, then the Dauphin of France (heir to the throne) and his mother, he was given the traditional title and appanage of the Duchy of Orléans and from birth was called the duc d'Orléans[citation needed].

[edit] Prince without a Name
He was known as Monsieur d'Orléans or the Prince sans nom (prince without name) until the family, the House of Bourbon, could come up with a name and was then called Nicholas Henri at his baptism. A year after his birth in 1608, his youngest brother was born. He was named Gaston Jean-Baptiste de France and was titled as duc d'Anjou as was customary for the third son.
From a young age, he had been engaged to Marie de Bourbon , duchesse de Montpensier and heiress of to the House of Bourbon-Montpensier.
Nicholas Henri died at the age of four as a result of an epileptic attack. The title of duc d'Orléans reverted back to the crown and was later given to Gaston who outlived him for another four decades. His brother would also later marry Marie in 1626.
