The decision to close a FLC is made by the FL directors, Scorpion0422 or Matthewedwards. They indicate this decision by removing the nomination page from the Featured list candidates page, and adding it to either:

1. archived nominations, for articles that are not promoted, or
2. featured logs and the Featured lists page, for articles that are promoted to featured status.

Some time later, a bot will mark the nomination page closed, and update the article talk page. Please do not update articlehistory or the talk page yourself, as that will stall the bot and create extra work. The delay in bot processing of the FLC closing can range from minutes to a few days; editors will know if an article was featured or archived by checking the archived nominations or the featured log.

1. If the article was not promoted, there is nothing editors need to do; the bot will update the talk page. Specifically, there is no need to remove the {{FLC}} template or update the {{articlehistory}} template; the bot will do that.
2. If the article was listed at FL by either of the Featured list directors, it has been promoted and you can add the star to the article, by adding {{featured list}} to the bottom of the article page (unless the bot has already done that). The bot will do everything else, viz., it will upgrade Project assessments, close the FLC, remove the {{FLC}} template, and update ArticleHistory.

The bot does not promote or fail nominations; it updates ArticleHistory and talk pages after one of the Featured list directors promotes or archives nominations.

Similarly, the decision to close a FLRC is made by the FL directors, Scorpion0422 or Matthewedwards, or their delegate, Sephiroth BCR. They indicate this decision by removing the nomination page from the Featured list review candidates page, and adding it to the Featured list review archive. Editors will know if the article was kept or delisted by checking the archive; the {{FLRC}} template should remain in place until the bot processes the close and adds the event to {{articlehistory}}.
