This page is a place to list foreign language articles on the English Wikipedia, to see if they can be translated before they are listed on Wikipedia:Articles for deletion. If someone speaks the language the article is written in and can state that it is not worth translating, the item should be moved to AfD or tagged with {{prod}}.

TRANSLATION DEPARTMENT

RELATED PROJECTS

[edit] Standard procedures

If the article is a mere copy of (all or part of) an article in a foreign-language Wikipedia, it can just be tagged with {{db-foreign}} to get added to Wikipedia:Candidates for speedy deletion: we want to discourage people who cut articles from one Wikipedia and paste to another without translating. If the intent is to ask for a translation of an article from a foreign-language Wikipedia, the correct place to do that is Wikipedia:Translation. As an alternative, you can leave a message on the contributing user's talk-page using the templates from Wikipedia:Pages needing translation into English/Templates for user talk pages or using {{UE}}.

Sometimes, legitimate articles are replaced by foreign-language content. In this case, the last English-language version should be restored from the history.

If an article has been listed here for two weeks and is still untranslated, it should be moved to AfD. When moving items to AfD, the boilerplate text on the article should be changed from {{notenglish}} to {{subst:afd}} and the other deletion steps should be carried out.

When listing a page here, you might want to find the Wikipedia:Embassy or Ambassador member of the Wikipedia that relates to the language the article is in and invite them to move the page to their own Wikipedia. If you don't even know what language the article is in you could use Language recognition chart and if that fails, some language recognition web site, such as xrce to find out. Please leave a note on this page if you do this to prevent duplication of messages. If you have come here from another Wikipedia, please note on this page what you think should be done with the article.

Please check for copyvio before listing here. (Articles which meet the criteria for CSD G12 can be speedily deleted with {{db-copyvio}}, others copyvios should be listed on WP:CP.) If you can tell what language an article is written in, that might help. Also consider posting the first line or so.

When a page listed here has been translated, its entry can be removed (or moved to cleanup if the translation needs another pair of eyes).

[edit] Boilerplate text

For a page that needs translation in its entirety (so it would be appropriate to delete if not fixed):

1. Use the notice {{Notenglish|NameOfLanguage}} if you know the language used, or {{Notenglish}} if you cannot identify the language of the page in question. The template will show up as:
2. Add a mention on this page, using:
{{subst:Needtrans| pg= | Language=NameOfLanguage| Comments= }}--~~~~ replacing NameOfLanguage with the English name of the language if you know which language was used, or {{subst:Needtrans| pg= | Language=unknown| Comments= }}--~~~~ if you cannot identify the language used
3. You may also choose to warn the contributing editor with {{Uw-english}}, the "use English" warning, or suggest to use a different language Wikipedia with {{contrib-xx1}}, where xx is the language code (available templates). An alternate template for identifying the article as having been listed here is {{uw-notenglish}}. Usage is {{subst:uw-notenglish|articlename|datein2weeksfromlisting}}~~~~.

If there is just a section that needs translation, that notice is inappropriate, so it's a little trickier:

1. Use [[Category:Wikipedia articles needing translation]].
2. Add an appropriate note at the top of the page in question, e.g.:
''Section [[#name-of-section|name-of-section]] contains text that needs translation into English.''.
3. Add a mention on this page.

If the article has been translated, but needs attention from someone approaching dual fluency in both languages:

1. Use the notice {{cleanup-translation}}, which will show up as:
2. Add a mention to the translation cleanup section on this page.

[edit] Pages for consideration

If you are not completely sure of what language an article is written in, feel free to use a language inspection site
and check the language recognition chart.
If you are sure, consider placing the corresponding template on the creator's talk page.

[edit] Ubst

The language of this article is Burmese. TheSmuel (talk) 20:25, 21 June 2009 (UTC)

I suspect that a fair proportion of the page may be a copyio of http://www.ubst.co.nr/, but it's tricky to tell. TheSmuel (talk) 20:32, 21 June 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Kampung sanglang

Malay or Indonesian. Akerbeltz (talk) 00:16, 30 June 2009 (UTC)

Hm this page already exists as a stub at Sanglang. It looks like a copyvio from a book or leaflet but hard to prove. Perhaps someone who is reasonably fluent could stub the historic content and move it to Sanglang? Akerbeltz (talk) 13:08, 4 July 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Pho Minh Temple

The language of this article is Vietnamese. Mostly in Vietnamese; needs complete translation. 98.117.156.103 (talk) 05:12, 2 July 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Jelena Kostov

The language of this article is Croatian. Allen3 talk 12:03, 2 July 2009 (UTC)

Judging by the usage of Cyrillic I'd say Serbian. About a possibly notable singer who appeared on a Serbian reality show. BalkanFever 12:15, 2 July 2009 (UTC)
Apparently identical article was recently deleted several times in a row from sr-wiki. Deletion log entries are:
  • 01:45, 2. јул 2009. Dungodung (разговор | прилози) обрисао „Jelena Kostov“ ‎ (садржај је био: '{{Музичар |Име = Jelena Kostov |слика = Слика:Jeca.PNG |боја позадине = солиста ...' (а једини уређивач је био 'TheBalkanBoy'))
  • 01:43, 2. јул 2009. Dungodung (разговор | прилози) обрисао „Jelena Kostov“ ‎ (јуче обрисан у складу са гласањем. молим вас, не правите га поново)

Fut.Perf. 16:58, 2 July 2009 (UTC)
I had that log machine-translated. Looks like the article was first snuffed per unclear notability, then twice again per their equivalent of our G4 speedy. I prodded the article, and, if contested, I will not hesitate to go to AfD. Not quite an A7 speedy, though. -- Blanchardb -MeMyEarsMyMouth- timed 00:45, 3 July 2009 (UTC)
Actually it underwent AfD there. BalkanFever 04:22, 3 July 2009 (UTC)
Yes, Blanchardb pointed out that it was re-deleted afterwards under a criterion similar to our WP:CSD#G4, namely that an article recreated after a discussion may be speedily deleted(if it is mostly identical). decltype (talk) 08:49, 3 July 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Nilambur - Nanjangud Rail Line

I believe it's written in Hindi. - APK coffee talk 06:04, 5 July 2009 (UTC)

I don't think it's Hindi as it doesn't show up on my screen - I have Devanagari fonts installed. I can't see it except for boxes, but based on the editor's other contributions, this should be in Malayalam and the page is likely an offshoot of Shoranur-Nilambur Railway Line. -SpacemanSpiff (talk) 19:10, 5 July 2009 (UTC)
It is Malayalam. ... discospinster talk 20:19, 5 July 2009 (UTC)
It was created by the same user who created the Malayalam version of Nilambur on the English wiki and is insisting on unproductive edits. I have left a friendly messages on Korangrad's page but if he keeps doing this, we'll need an admit to talk to him. Akerbeltz (talk) 01:09, 6 July 2009 (UTC)
Ah, my bad. APK coffee talk 13:06, 6 July 2009 (UTC)
Article is a petition requesting the said rail line, has been PRODded. -SpacemanSpiff (talk) 19:02, 6 July 2009 (UTC)

[edit] الملا علاوي

The language of this article is Arabic. WWGB (talk) 12:23, 5 July 2009 (UTC)

Title transliterates as "Mullah Alawi", apparently about a 19th-century religious scholar from Bahrain [1]. Couldn't find out anything about notability. Fut.Perf. 13:01, 5 July 2009 (UTC)
The same author created Mullah Allawi. The English-language version is currently the subject of an AfD. Would someone here be able to comment on it's notability/etc. --rannṗáirtí anaiṫnid (coṁrá) 19:58, 5 July 2009 (UTC)

About the "bucket theory" or "barrel principle", (wrongly?) attributed to Laurence J. Peter. The text is all about the Chinese blogosphere, not sure what was copied form here and what the original source is. [edit] Gaaiho

The language of this article is Chinese. This is a short, newly-created article. From the rough machine-translation, it appears to lack any context or be spam. If true, it could be a candidate for speedy deletion. But I leave that decision in the hands of people that can, you know, read the language. TheTito (Discuss) 07:42, 10 July 2009 (UTC)

It is about a software company which fails to assert notability. Nominated for CSD A7. Hitro talk 08:09, 10 July 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Ali Jasiqi

The initial language of this article was Albanian. Kosovan writer. I've done my best to rewrite but some of it read as if badly translated or machine translated. It probably is notable - Doraemon is very popular in Japan. I've notified the anime and manga wikiproject about the page to see if someone wants to make it better.VsevolodKrolikov (talk) 09:11, 7 July 2009 (UTC)
The Doraemon manga and anime are definitely notable, but I don't think the TV anime episodes by themselves are notable. -- Meyer (talk) 09:14, 7 July 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Tusculum

This article is in English, but several portions appear to be direct translations from on the Italian Wikipedia. Some of this article is in good shape, but there are a lot of grammatical and spelling issues strewn throughout. I have cleaned this up a bit and checked against the Spanish. there a they re a few bits missing but they are local facts like what roads lead to it i can add them if you want but they seem kinda not very useful to anyone. similarly the past and future events sections in the spanish are easily copy pasted in but i am not sure that's very encylopaedic. I've added convert templates and a couple of wikilinks, Have a look and see what you think, it's still not a particularly good article but I think I've got it into English idiom. To other editors: the language of this article is American English. SimonTrew (talk) 09:27, 6 June 2009 (UTC)

[edit] François Vieta

The initial language of this article was French. See Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Mathematics#François_Viète.

Who are you ?
Who wrote that ?

I am the contributor of this article, and the contributor of the artical in french too, My english is poor, and i have translated it as i can. I am not a robot, son of nobody ! I wrote everywhere, before posting, that i need help to rewrite 'my' page in english. I think that it may be much better than the old page about Viéta which was a stub. Perhaps some links goes to french pages oulala... I'm frightened. (I have created new links to english pages, this morning) On wpfr a lot of pages leads to english texts. Are you afraid of that ? In fact, Someone, with a great experience on Wp has created a count in purpose to make that kind of advice anonymously. It's very very unfriendly... and i will stop all contributions to Wpen, and perhaps to Wpfr if you do'nt sign you post. Jean de Parthenay (talk) 05:13, 22 June 2009 (UTC)

By th way, may I ask you to have a look on New algebra ? This page is translated from my own work on Wpfr, and it is a real bad job. Sorry ! it is worse than François Vieta and it needs seriously some work !Jean de Parthenay (talk) 08:44, 22 June 2009 (UTC)
I'm not sure what Jean de Parthenay (talk · contribs) is complaining about. All I did was tag the pages François Vieta and New Algebra as containing roughly translated text from French which needs more attention from a near-fluent speaker. Jean de Parthenay's contributions are clearly valuable and in good faith; they're not being proposed for deletion in any way. --Classicalecon (talk) 12:49, 22 June 2009 (UTC)
I complained 1) about the roughless of the tags, 2) because you didn't signed your first post and scrashed your user page after it... (i didn't know if you did exist) and 3) to have been suspected being a robot. But that's forgot ; i'am pleased about what you wrote. I'd like to enrich both Wpfr and Wpen (if i can)... that's all. My english is not native. And when you taged the article, I hadn't finished to it. That's all. If somebody native speaker wants to make New algebra better... he is welcome.

Jean de Parthenay (talk) 18:15, 22 June 2009 (UTC)

  • This article is quite well written, and has no French-English issues left. However, there are a dozen or so titles and other quotes in Latin, which should be translated. I think this article should be moved to the top of this page.
