Can you get rid of the Chiang Kao-shek Memorial? Is the WikiItaly page fronted by a pic of Mussolini? There are so many things that can symbolize Taiwan. Localization movements have focused on nature, especially Jade Mountain (Yu Shan). A nice pic of that would make a much better statement about Taiwan. If you want something recognized, go with Taipei 101. But CKS? He shot thousands of people in Taiwan.... Michael Turton

71.106.149.53 keeps deleting this image from Demographics of Taiwan. He says it is inaccurate and accuses it of being PRC propaganda. Is it incorrect to call Hakka and Minnan people Han Chinese? And is the image violating NPOV? — Nrtm81 06:41, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

Anyone ever look at this page? lol. There's a bigger issue now, see Talk:Taiwanese people. There is a view that Taiwanese (Hoklo & Hakka) are no longer Chinese and should be regarded seperately as "Taiwanese" and not Chinese. I think it's based on the claim that over 88% of Taiwanese have aboriginal blood. There is an anonymous user who is definitely pushing a POV agenda. I noticed his recent edits in Demographics of Taiwan, where he has changed the text under Nationality which said Taiwanese are officially "Chinese citizens" (fact) to "Taiwanese citizens". Other things is to change anything "Chinese" to "Taiwanese" such as the population of ROC is 98% Taiwanese instead of 98% Chinese — Nrtm81 04:11, 29 November 2006 (UTC)

The Taiwanese are not officially Chinese citizens, and being a Chinese citizen is not an ethnicity. It would be better to use the systems used by the locals themselves, who divide Taiwan into four broad groups, Mainlanders (post-1945 Chinese immigrants), Taiwanese (pre-1945), Hakkas, and aborigines. The term "Taiwanese" is confusing because it can designate any or all those groups. -- Michael Turton

Yes, Michael Turton is correct and the diagram above is not. What the diagram actually refers to is racial--and not really existing ethnic--divisions/classes. My suspicion is that the creator of this diagram was him/herself a "Han Chinese" who wanted to push a POV agenda to obscure or cover over the classification Michael Turton mentions is normally used by locals (i.e., 外省人,臺灣人,客家人,原住民), and which classifies ethnicity on the basis of one's mother-tongue (and not his/her racial origin). User:Miborovsky have created this image (see left) a while ago. While it's unsuitable for WikiProject China, I think it will suit perfectly for WikiProject Taiwan. It combines together the Wikipedian barnstar and the Blue Sky White Sun Medal of Honor together. Should we use this image for our awards template? [edit] Wikipedia Day Awards

Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. It is my opinion that removing "National" is in fact POV (since it then put ROC at a lower stature than PRC), and with Ling.Nut's consent, I've reverted the two templates. The Republic of China Copyright Code, article 50 state:

以中央或地方機關或公法人名義公開發表之著作，在合理範圍內，得重製或公開播送。[1]

I think that there should be a image copyright/fair use tag to tag the ROC governmental images with this explanation (which I would translate as "Works publicly published under the authorship of a central government or local government agency, or of a public legal person, may be reproduced or publicly transmitted within reasonable bounds"), but I don't deal a whole lot with images and templates. [edit] Naming Conventions

I think we should have different naming conventions than the ones in WP:China. It is confusing sometimes, because most of the people have their family names presented first, but some are presented last, such as Chien-Ming Wang. The names of the Taiwanese people are different from the names of the Chinese people, the Taiwanese names have a dash in between. So I think we should create new naming conventions for Taiwanese people.--Jerrypp772000 02:21, 22 January 2007 (UTC)

Um, I am not sure if you are aware of this, but the "Blue Sky with a White Sun" logo you used is not the emblem of the Republic of China, but the emblem of the Kuomintang. Also, in a complex political enviroment like the Taiwan topic, it is best to avoid the use of any national-related materials. Hi, I noticed that there don't seem to be categories by administrative subdivision for people from Taiwan (e.g. analogous to Category:American people by state), any reason? I'm considering creation and population of a Category:Taiwanese people by county or something, but I wanted to be sure of the exact structure and nomenclature before I started this, since I suspect I may be opening up a large can of worms here:

  • Should the form be "People from" or "People of"?
  • Should this include direct-controlled cities and municipal cities alongside the counties (e.g. "People from Kaohsiung")? If so, is it necessary to change the name of the parent "Taiwanese people by county" to reflect this somehow?
  • Should there be an intermediate level of "People from Taiwan province" and "People from Fujian province", or should the Fujian counties be put directly under the parent as well?
  • "People from Matsu/Quemoy" or "People from Lienchiang county/Kinmen county"?
  • Should the county names be suffixed with "Taiwan", "Taiwan province/Fujian province", "Republic of China", or something else?

This banner now inserts an extra blank line after it, which doesn't fit with the other project banners. Also, at least one option, politics=yes, places what looks like another independent WikiProject banner below. I think the article's title is somewhat poor - it sounds like Chinglish. Ideogram says that it is a commonly used term in Taiwan and elsewhere, but I was wondering what the literal translation of the Chinese term is and whether we could come up with a more "polished" title. It may sound fine to people whose first language is not English, but it doesn't to someone like myself - something like "based in Taiwan" makes much more sense.

I didn't like it either. As I had pointed out on the talkpage, I think the ROC on Taiwan sounds more like a concept and not a period of time. Although I know it's common, I think renaming the article Taiwan Post-War Period would be better.--Jerry 10:51, 14 August 2007 (UTC)

Hi, I am hoping someone can help with this. I am attempting to write an article on the New Formosa Band, which is requested at WP:AR1. There is very little written about them in English - here, here and here is a little information in English. They seem to have been a part of an entire genre, Hakka (music), which doesn't have an article yet. But Google turns up almost nothing in English. However, under their character name 新寶島康樂隊, I get a lot of hits on Google, but I don't speak a lick of this language. Can anyone help me with putting together an article that will survive AfD? Can anyone look over this article and its sources? The article is written/translated by the subject, which by itself is not a reason for deletion. But it also makes a number of claims of the kind "Jacobson promoted X → X happened" with the implication that X happened because Jacobson promoted them. Does anyone know what the translation of 縣長 is? It seems to me that it is "Magistrate" on Wikipedia, but I've seen many usage of "Commissioner," for example in the book Forbidden Nation and in Taipei Times. Which one is the correct one to use?--Jerry 20:45, 21 November 2007 (UTC)

Hi. This is a query/suggestion transferred from Talk:Taiwan#"Taiwan" as informal name for ROC vs. Taiwan the island.

Having passed by a few of the articles, templates and categories named using "Republic of China" and/or "Taiwan", I'm not sure these names (and their combination) are being used consistently. If they are, perhaps some kind of comment could -- should -- be inserted at the start of these pages in order to indicate and/or point to the rationale (and, if these pages are subject to POV renamings, perhaps they should all be permanently semi-protected).

I'm no expert on things Chinese, but, given that Wikipedia is meant to be a general encyclopedia for lay folk like myself, perhaps that's a plus. As "Taiwan" is used as an informal moniker for the Republic of China since 1949, is it possible to name all articles/categories/etc either using

  • "Taiwan (island)" (or "Taiwanese (island)") for all topics primarily or mostly relating to the island known as "Taiwan", before and/or after 1949 -- i.e. "Taiwan" plus some kind of disambiguation to indicate the island not the post-1949 Republic of China;
  • "Republic of China (Taiwan)" for all topics primarily or mostly relating to the Republic of China since 1949;
  • "Republic of China" for all topics primarily or mostly relating to the Republic of China before 1949...?

As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.

  • The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
  • The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
  • A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.

Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.

I have proposed a Wikiproject workgroup on Sino-Japanese-Korean relations.


In my opinion, Wikipedia topics on Sino-Japanese-Korean topics all too often, and unfortunately, reflect the tense, exaggerated, embittered and often politically nationalistic debates currently prevalent in the popular presses of these three great nations.

In many case, these polemics are immature, propagandistic and unencyclopedic in nature and causes being promoted by unethical editing habits. Japanese-Korean topics appear to be amongst the more problematic topics on the Wikipedia.

At the same time, within each nation and academic circles there are moves to create pan-national understanding and document an accurate account of history. It is therefore proposed to establish a Sino-Japanese-Korean workgroup interested in establishing good working relations to improve the academic nature of these articles and encourage normal editing.


For the sakes of honesty and transparency, this pan-national workgroup was sincerely proposed precisely in response to the mode of operation used by many editors

Such wasteful activities as persistent allegations, personal attacks and other distractions from the primary activity of content production and reference checking only discouraging newcomers, less aggressive and, especially, genuine academics from participating on the Wikipedia. They undermine the goodwill of the Wikipedia.

It is hoped that by bring together authors from across the spectrum who are interested in rising above differences standards, understanding and sensitivity can be improved; just as they are in academia at present.

Your contribution is welcome. My apologies if it is not according to the protocols to make such announcements on other WikiProjects.

In 1871, there was an incident in which an Okinawan fishing boat crashed upon Formosa (Taiwan). As I understand it, there was some sort of struggle between the Okinawan fishermen and a number of local natives, which ended in the deaths of nearly all of the Okinawan fishermen. As Peking and Tokyo became aware of the event, it developed into a major international incident, leading to sovereignty debates over both Taiwan and the Ryukyus, and playing a major role in the eventual decision by Tokyo in 1879 to abolish the Ryukyu Kingdom and fully annex the Ryukyus as "Okinawa Prefecture", over China's protests.

Here's my question - does an article for this incident already exist? If not, what should we call it? There is an article on the Japanese Taiwan Expedition of 1874 which resulted, but does the original incident not merit an article as well?

George H. Kerr, a British historian of both Okinawa and Taiwan, calls it the "Formosa Incident" in his book "Okinawa: the History of an Island People", though that is of course a term useful from the Okinawan/Japanese point of view. From the Taiwanese point of view, I'm sure it could just as easily be called the "Ryukyu Incident". Neither is sufficiently objective or explanatory for our purposes. Louis Frederic's "Japan Encyclopedia" calls it ryūkyū kizoku mondai (琉球帰属問題), the term also used in the Japanese Wikipedia's article for the Taiwan Expedition (there's no separate article for the incident on the Japanese Wikipedia), a term which translates roughly as "Ryukyu Belonging-to Problem".

I do not know whether or not I will write such an article any time soon, but in the meantime it would be good to have a standard title to link to, even if it is a red link.

I have posted a comment on WikiProject Japan's talk page as well, asking that anyone interested join the discussion here. I hope we can reach a consensus quickly and easily, with a minimum of heated debate; this is a potentially controversial subject, but I hope we can be mature about it, distance ourselves from the issue, and approach it as objective, professional, scholarly historians. I admire your optimism. In the meantime, I will have a look at what Davidson and Imbault-Hart have to say about the 1871 incident. I will also include a more detailed account of the 1874 Japanese punitive campaign and the battle of Stone Gate in the 1874 article. Davidson has several detailed pages on the campaign, including a reliable Japanese order of battle.

Davidson has only a short paragraph dealing with the 1871 incident, compared with 46 pages on the 1874 expedition. This is all he has to say on the subject:
"A large fishing and trading vessel belonging to one of the islands of the Miyako group of the Loochoos was wrecked on the southern coast of Formosa in the month of December, 1871. The disaster occurring in proximity to the Botan tribe of savages, fifty-four of the crew were murdered. A few survivors were eventually able to return to their homes, and through them the news of the crime was made known to the highest authorities with whom they were acquainted."[1]
Davidson describes the late-nineteenth-century history of Taiwan in exhaustive detail, and if this is all he can find on the 1871 massacre, I would be surprised if any other source was able to add much.
That being the case, I think it would probably be best to keep the 1871 incident within the 1874 article for the time being. If further details emerge, we could perhaps then consider treating it in a separate article ('Paiwan Massacre, 1871').
I have begun to rewrite the 1874 article, using Davidson as my main source. I expect to be able to provide a far more detailed account of the Japanese expedition, and I will also provide a far more detailed account of the political and diplomatic issues raised. At present they are not adequately described or sourced. Expect to see this page change considerably over the next few weeks.

I have a problem with the way the Taiwan articles are structured. There seems to be something missing. I was looking at the disambiguation page, and we have as possible meanings for "Taiwan"

  • Taiwan, the island in East Asia...
  • Republic of China, often known as "Taiwan", the political entity...
  • Taiwan Area, the geopolitical area...
  • Taiwan Province, the administrative division...

But what is meant when someone says they visited Green Island during their stay in Taiwan? What is meant when aborigines from Orchid Island are called "Taiwanese aborigines"?

Like the names of other places having a single government and shared history, a single name is typically used for the whole area, in this case the name is "Taiwan", and it refers to more than just the political entity or entities doing the governing.

I don't know enough about the usage to say whether Kinmen and Matsu implied when people say "Taiwan", but I know that people are not excluding Turtle Island when using the term.

Perhaps the easiest way to solve this would be to make the main "Taiwan" article to be about more than just the main island and instead make it about the entire area that is implied in most usages of "Taiwan". Readin (talk) 13:58, 23 October 2008 (UTC)

An editor is proposing to remove from Diplomatic missions of Ireland details of Ireland's unofficial Government office in Taipei, on the grounds that Ireland does not have diplomatic relations with the Republic of China/Taiwan.

Current practice is that we include these quasi-official offices, as they perform the de facto responsibilities of a diplomatic mission and these offices are usually run (albeit at arms length) by a sending state's foreign affairs ministry.

In line with Wikipedia's policy on consistency, a change to this article would necessitate us to eliminate details of all foreign Government offices in Taiwan which do not recognise the Republic of China/Taiwan.

Could we also ascertain if receiving states should be named according to how they name themselves, or how the sending state calls it.

Should people like Hu Lien be written in Hanyu Pinyin? He was a national of the Republic of China and had never been living under the rule of the Chinese communist. Montemonte (talk) 01:39, 16 June 2009 (UTC)

When people's names have appeared in English language press in the English world, that's the one that should be used. If it's appeared in scholarly works, then the form most commonly used by English language scholars should be used. Since there are many works on the 20th century Chinese Civil War, whichever spelling is most common should be used. If he's appeared in the New York Times or Time Magazine, etc, I think that version should be used. 70.29.212.226 (talk) 04:12, 18 June 2009 (UTC)
I'd doubt they're commonly known in English by Hanyu Pinyin in the English-language world. And I wouldn't be surprised if these people have official romanised names with ROC government registry. Montemonte (talk) 00:30, 25 June 2009 (UTC)
