Zabaykalsk

Zabaykalsk (Russian: Забайка́льск) is an urban-type settlement and administrative centre of Zabaykalsky District of Zabaykalsky Krai, Russia. It lies on the Russian-Chinese border just opposite Abagaitu Islet and Manzhouli, China. It was founded in 1904 as a station on the China Far East Railway. The Russo-Chinese highway AH6 passes through the townlet. Population: 10,200 (2005 est.); 10,210 (2002 Census); 8,632 (1989 Census).

It is a transshipment station for a break of gauge on the Trans-Manchurian branch of the Trans-Siberian Railway. The break of gauge is between the 1,524 mm (5 ft) Russian Railways and the 1,435 mm (4 ft 81⁄2 in) Chinese Railways.
